The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Rev Jonathan Bettey has stated that teachers across the country will soon be mandated to write licensing exams before they are recognised as professionals.
He indicated that both private and public teachers are expected to be licensed in September 2017 before they can teach in the classrooms.
Rev. Bettey said teachers need to pass the exams before they will be issued certificates to teach.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, he explained that the exams does not make teachers horrible and that it will offer them the opportunity to be professionals.
‘With effect from September this year (2017), all teachers are expected to be licensed before they are recognised as professional teachers. This is a mandate, an advise by the educational body called national teaching council which has been established to advise the minister of education on educational development or issues… if you are a teacher by profession from all public training colleges, or where ever you have been educated, you are are expected to be given license as nurses also have licenses to qualify them and make them recognised. So therefore, teachers are to make sure that their members are licensed,’ he explained.
According to him, a certificate alone is not enough to qualify a private or public teacher as professional.
‘…When you are licensed, it comes out with the idea that you are a better professional teacher who is qualified to work in the classrooms as a teacher,’ he said.
Rev Bettey allayed fears that the exams writing is an additional obstacles to teachers ‘Its just a normal thing that goes on in other institutions’.
The PRO of GES failed to comment if without the license, the country is producing substandard teachers teaching pupils and students.
‘Personally, I cant justify that, that question is not for me to answer,…whether somebody is qualified or not, we are licensing our teachers, with the licensing, it makes them more professional and more recognised,’ he said.
He said the qualification as teachers will be questioned if they fail the licensing exams saying a decision as to whether they will be sacked or not will be made public.
He indicated that the exams could not be implemented in 2015 as planned saying the educational body couldn’t conclude on some decisions.
