Nine universities offering graduate courses are threatening to break away from the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) following the disqualification of a presidential candidate Nana Asafo Adjei at congress.
The universities include the University of Ghana Legon, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), Ghana institute of Journalism (GIJ), Methodist University and the Ghana Telecoms University.
The presidential candidate Nana Asafo Adjei who was standing on the ticket of the University of Ghana failed to stand for the elections against the winner Kwame Bona of the University of Professional Studies because of a series of legal tassels that were brought against him at the GRASAG court.
The issues had to do with the disqualification of two of his running mates Enoch Agyare and Eben Abaka which rendered his candidacy void.
Enoch Agyare was the first to be disqualified because the KNUST had written to GRASAG denouncing him as a student of the university while Eben Abaka was disqualified for being wrongfully vetted and also campaigning ahead of his vetting against the rules of the electoral commission.
A disgruntled gender commissioner aspirant who also withdrew her candidature Nana Ama Kunadu who spoke to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador warned that all nine aggrieved universities will form a splinter group if government and management of tertiary institutions do not overturn the results of last weekend’s elections.
“We believe that the judgement that was given to Nana Kwame Asafo Adjei was unfair. We believe that due procedure was not followed and we believe that the NEC had an interest in bringing Bona on board.”
“We are calling on the minister for tertiary education to call us and listen to what we want to tell him. If they want peace and unity in the graduate’s students association, we are calling on them to do the right thing. If not, we are not only threatening but we are promising them that the nine universities are going to form our association,” she insisted.
She indicated that the association had exhausted all its avenues of redress and the decision was the only way to fight for their rights.
