The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) have described as irresponsible the inability of political parties notably the governing New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress to disband affiliated vigilante groups across the country.
The coalition expressed the concern in an election postmodern media engagement held in Kumasi to address the continuous operation of political party vigilante forces in the country.
It comes few days after the Invincible Forces of the New Patriotic Party threatened to visit mayhem on the Tema Metropolis if government failed to offer them jobs.
The group dared to replicate the aggression of the Delta Forces another vigilante group of the New Patriotic Party in Kumasi who attacked the security liaison at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and subsequently attacked a magistrate court to free their colleagues on trial.
Speaking at a media engagement in Kumasi, diplomat and member of the advisory board of CODEO H.E Francis Tsegah described the post election terror being unleashed by these groups as a danger to the political and democratic development of the country.
Reading parts of CODEO’s position on the matter, he indicated “CODEO calls on political parties to disband these affiliated groups. It urged all stakeholders particularly the security agencies to address this growing menace
The leaders of the NPP and the NDC who are largely responsible for the emergence of these groups in the 4th republic should own up to the responsibilities and work together with the police to disband all politically affiliated vigilante groups,” he added.
H.E. Tsegah also threw a caution to government to view the operations of these forces who sometimes call themselves soldiers of the party as a national security threat.
It is however unclear whether the political parties will heed any call of a kind as in June 2016 all political parties signed a pact in Ada to disassociate themselves from such groups and support the police to dissolve them permanently.
“We shall not employ the services of militant pressure groups at any time before, during and after the 2016 general elections. Political Parties commit to exposing any undesirable elements within our ranks and hand them over to the authorities,” parts of the two page communiqué said.
