The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Alhassan Tampuli has entreated fuel operators to preserve human lives by ensuring that they adhere to safety precautions.
He further urged fuel consumers to put their safety first anytime they visit fuel stations.
This advice was given at a press conference held at Golden tulip by the authority on Thursday July 20, 2017 to pre inform the media about a safety campaign to be launched in August dubbed “people’s safety first”.
According to him, there is the need for the general public to be abreast with basic safety precaution tips when using petroleum products such as liquefied petroleum gas, petrol, diesel and kerosene.
The authority recorded 15 cases of petroleum fire in the first quarter of the year blaming the casualties on ignorance and indiscipline on the path of stakeholders in the petroleum industry.
This, he said triggered the NPA to review its mode of operations where it will now operate under new guidelines.
“The distance between one filling station and the other should be a 1000 meters and a bit far from recreational centers,” he stated.
The guidelines capture a review of the permit act which took effect on January this year.
Previously, the location of a fuel station was determined by the Town and Country Planning Committee, but now the NPA will inspect a proposed site before giving out a permit.
Mr. Tampuli added that drivers should switch off their engines when they are at the fuel pumps and report fuel stations that fail to adhere to safety precautions.
He further entreated pump operators to refrain from using mobile phones at their workplaces.
The NPA CEO warned consumers to stop patronizing petroleum products from table top seller.
He advised domestic users to pay particular attention to their cylinders to detect leakages.
