President Akufo-Addo says his government will operate a legally and technically open system that will ensure that all activities and endeavours of the administration are available to the citizenry.
Delivering the keynote address at the Open Data Conference held at the Accra International Conference Centre, under the theme: ‘Open data for sustainable development in Africa”, President Akufo-Addo said the developed world has achieved all they have simply because their governments and State institutions embraced open data and information systems that made their respective governments open in their dealings and transparent in their decision making.
The President added that Ghana and the rest of Africa have a duty to adopt open data and information availability models in their respective countries if Africa is to develop beyond its current state.
“The Ministry of Communication will address legal and technical challenges with our open data initiative and ensure use whole of government approach through public policy. The government will also promote use of open data in government for evidenced based decision making and encourage the community to use open data in diverse fields and sectors. Ultimately, Ghana will sign unto the global open data charter and ensure that all government data are open by default”, the President stated.
About 600 experts, representatives of the international development agencies and other stakeholders have converged in Accra to discuss how to fast-track the implementation of an open data system in Africa.
Ghana made a commitment to join the open government partnership, an initiative of the United States of America (USA) to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance by signing onto the policy in September 2011, at the 66th UN General Assembly in New York.
The signing of the partnership sparked off a quest for Ghana to open up its government data with some data now available at the government portal.
