A senior physician at the Asuofua Health Center in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region, Fosu Kwame Peter has expressed worry about the harsh conditions the facility is reeling under.
Patients are now being asked to sleep on the bare floor as they wait for medical treatment.
According to him, nurses and doctors work in one consulting room which also serves as the only training center for students.
Madam Gifty Badikwe who is in charge of Reproductive and Child Health/Family Planning speaking to Ultimate News said they lack basic items such as cotton, gloves and syringes and this hinders smooth healthcare delivery.
‘Money to buy these items is a problem; the nurses are compelled to use their own resources to purchase the items,’ she said.
She added that lack of beds at the centre do not permit them to admit patients for longer periods saying they only have thirteen beds.
Nurse Badikwe indicated that they are sometimes compelled to turn away patients, since children and older persons are sometimes placed in the same wards.
‘The situation has been like this for the past six years,’ she said.
Furthermore, the management of the hospital are unhappy about the delay in the payment of their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims.
The medical professionals at the Asuofua Health Clinic are therefore calling on government and stakeholders to come to their aid.
The maternity ward-turned health centre serves about eight communities in the district including Asuofia, Asamang, Achiase, Adankwame, Esaso, Amoaman among others.
