The Acting Head of Transfusion Medicine Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr Francis Sarkodie has said, less than 1% of the nation’s population donate blood.
The deputy chief Biomedical Scientist said, out of the 27 million of the nation’s population, less than 200,000 people donate blood thereby making demand for blood exceeding supply at the various health facilities of which the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is not exceptional.
He said this at the celebration of 2017 World Blood Donor Day organised by the Hospital’s Transfusion Medicine Unit held in Kumasi on June 17, 2017 under the theme: “What can you do?. Give blood. Give now. Give Often”.
According to him, at least 1% of the nation’s population which is equivalent to 270,000 should have donated blood in accordance with Blood Collection Index (BCI), but those who donate blood is less than the required number.
He therefore appealed to Ghanaians to voluntarily donate blood to help save lives of people.
He also appealed to government to increase budget allocation for public education on the need to donate blood to help intensify public education programmes on blood donation.
