The Concerned Drivers Association has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante Apeatu to as a matter of urgency take his men off the roads.
According to the association, drivers’ and their vehicles are searched as if they are criminals carrying some contraband.
The association said, policemen are back on the streets harassing them by collecting monies from them after the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP John Kudalor’s ordered suspension of vehicles checks.
The former IGP months ago ordered Police officers to stop checking registration documents and drivers’ licenses.
However, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) for the Association Francis Appiah speaking to Abusua Dawuro’s Osei Kwadwo said personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTD) have refused to focus on traffic management duties but have made it a business of collecting monies from them.
He said they are treated like armed robbers when they fail to give money to the police.
“We are urging police personnel and IGP David Asante Apeatu to stop treating drivers like armed robbers. They are on the road to focus on traffic management duties but not to collect monies from us,’ he stated.
The Association has threatened to stage a demonstration on July 17, 2017 against the government for the introduction of a supposed new driver’s license into the system.
