After scoring 50 goals for the senior national team, Asamoah Gyan joins a legendary class of four other African players namely; Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o Fils, Godfrey Chitalu and Hossam Hassam, who have scored 50 goals for their respective national teams.
The former Udinese forward is being modest and has refused to accept any legendary tag despite hitting a milestone of goals for Ghana.
Gyan made his debut for the Black Stars on November 19, 2003 – coming in a substitute for Isaac Boakye and subsequently netted on the 90th minute at age 17 against Somalia. A game Ghana won by five goals to nil – a similar fashion against Ethiopia on Sunday.
He has since not looked back but carried the nation on his back in difficult times and in addition shipped in some incredible and sumptuous goals for the national team. Among them is Ghana’s first ever goal at the World Cup in Germany 2006 and the half volley against USA in 2010 World Cup to send Ghana to the quarter-finals.
“For me I don’t need to blow my own horn, the numbers says it’s all. The statistics and everything I have done for the national team– the people have to judge because I have nothing to say,” Gyan told Ultimate FM.
“I feel blessed to join these legendary people and really thank God for what he has done for me and my family.”
The 31-year-old opined that his secret has been keeping a level head and focusing on what is ahead of him without bowing to negative comments.
“I am always confident in everything I do. That is what has kept me pushing on till now.
“That has been my motivation because I’m strong, mentally and always focused on everything I do. There are ups and downs in life and that has brought me this far,” he added.
