Passengers and drivers in Kumasi on Thursday got into a scuffle with the road safety taskforce in Kumasi as the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) continued its road safety checks and enforcement on crash prone roads; ahead of the Easter Festivities.
A joint taskforce put together by NRSC, Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in the region have begun conducting education and enforcement operations on crash prone roads in the Ashanti region.
The operation has become necessary as the Ashanti region has this year alone recorded four hundred and seventy four (474) accident cases out of which eighty two (82) persons have lost their lives.
But passengers commuting across the Kumasi – Accra main road, however went furious verbally assaulting MTTD officers and the staff of the road safety commission who stopped their vehicles from proceeding with their journey because of offences including driving with worn our tyres, absence of warning triangles, expired vehicular documents, and questionable driving licenses.
Speaking to Ultimate News, the Ashanti regional director of the Road Safety Commission, Ing. Samuel Asiamah indicated that the operation was for the safety of the aggrieved passengers.
He told reporter Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “you are travelling with a vehicle to Accra, and the driver hasn’t gotten a license, he has a fake road worthy certificate and you are saying you are in a hurry so we should allow the driver to go. You are telling us you want the person whom you are not sure is a driver to drive you to Accra. The passengers must know that we are doing this for their safety and when we stop them we explain what we are doing to the passengers”
The task force has also mounted a mobile van alongside its check points where drivers can renew their documents and purchase equipments like triangles and fire extinguishers to be cleared to continue their journey.
Ing Samuel Asiama pointed out that the only cases that would warrant arresting of drivers will be when they commit offences that infringe the laws of the country.
The operation will on Monday move to the Kumasi Lake Bosomtwe Road which is expected to be busy on Easter Monday as revellers make their way to the Lake side for excursions and picnics.
