The Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman Manu has stated that government is cash-strapped and that it will not be able to buy a new oxygen plant for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Management of KATH is calling on the Akufo-Ado’s government to come to their aid to purchase a new oxygen plant because the existing plant is operating below capacity and the hospital is still sourcing significant portion of its oxygen needs from private providers to augment the in-house production of the product.
But speaking with Lantam Papanko on Ultimate Breakfast Show, he said government will be unable to assist them financially now and can only assist them in future when things get better.
He blamed the erstwhile Mahama-administration for creating arrears in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) system making it difficult for the hospitals to generate finds internally.
Mr Manu assured that government will ensure that NHIS claims are paid on time to health facilities to reduce government’s interventions.
‘Government is looking at the whole challenge holistically, trying to work so hard to begin to put the NHIS stands at their door steps easily every month. Government we all know is cash-strapped at the moment so it will take a little bit more time to begin to regularise some of these challenges, and I believe with time, we will solve these problems. The ministry itself hasn’t got money to purchase oxygen for them now, we are looking at other options, they themselves are suggesting new proposals, lets see in the next two or three months,’ he stated.
He questioned why heads of such health facilities are able to buy personal vehicles but are not able to mobilise funds to solve problems the facilities are faced with.
The minister of health said public hospitals still have the mentality of offering social services to patients where they can resort to government for help when in need arguing that health professionals need to be re-orientated.
According to him, running a hospital is like business which needs to be taking seriously, ‘so it wouldn’t take long, the realisation is very close, new policies and guidelines will flow and things will begin to get better’.
He said government will be going into retrospection the selection process of top management for public health facilities.
