KASS Young app developers win social innovation award

The Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASS) came top over the weekend after twelve senior high schools battled it out in the interschool’s Computer Science for Social Innovation (CS4SI) contest.

The annual event which is spearheaded by the Centre for Social Innovations with support from Google and Harper Web Solutions is aimed at equipping students and their computer science teachers to provide critical solutions using technology to solve Ghana’s social problems.

The final competition which came off at the Christian Service University Campus Auditorium, Kumasi witnessed students exploring Information and Communications Technology to address topics comprising sanitation, malaria prevention, disease control, racism, education, road safety, social vices among others.

The young students took turns to demonstrate how their internet and mobile phone applications could help the country create advocacy and eradicate the ills and societal challenges of the country.

In the end KASS emerged winner with an app which encompassed sanitation, exam malpractices, wrong spellings and fun.

Leader of the KASS team, Kwadwo Appiah told Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, he is hopeful the innovative app will inspire a change in attitude among Ghanaians.

“Looking at the kind of problems we are suffering as Ghanaians, we need change. The social problems we focused on, are the current social problems we are facing and I know our project will shine like the stars,” he exuded.

The second position went to Toase Senior High School (TOSS) which developed an app to help drivers know and adhere to road signs to prevent needless accidents.

Whereas the winner took home a desktop computer with an embedded printer, TOSS won for itself a desktop computer with a separate printer for the school.

The Adisadel College which travelled to Kumasi to partake in the contest came third with an app that promotes advocacy on sanitation. For its work, the school received a laptop with a router.

The other participating schools that were presented with citations and certificates of participation were, the Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School, Armed Forces Senior High School, T.I Ahmadiyya SHS, KNUST SHS and Opoku Ware SHS.

The rest were Osei Tutu SHS, St Louis Senior high school, Wesley Girls Senior High school and the Osei Kyeretwie SHS.

Chief executive of the Centre for social innovation Benson Adjei who was elated at the show of innovation by the young Ghanaian students, promised to secure further “financial and technical support” to scale up the innovative apps for commercial use.

He assured, “We will go back to all the projects that were presented and look at the ones that have the potential to be scaled up and developed them further into something that can be put on the app store and also made available to other organisations or individuals that may want to use them.”

Perhaps this programme might be what will evolve the next Ghanaians who will match the Mark Zuckerbergs, Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, the Evan Williams and other global App Developers boot for boot right from SHSs.
