AN OPEN LETTER TO DR KK SARPONG
Dear Sir,
Congratulations on your new appointment. I’m so proud of you. I have been meaning to do this for a while now but I’m glad that matters arising made it imperative to officially write to you.
This is Akua Achiaa, the young lady you counselled to opt for Petroleum engineering instead of pharmacy, nine years ago. Thanks for the timely advise. Today, I have graduated and looking back I have no regrets. Thanks for your magnanimity and the mentorship you gave me when my Godmother of blessed memory, Auntie Agnes Acquah brought me to your office. This morning however my disposition is with much heaviness about our beloved corporation’s latest decision.
My brother and colleague Hans Addo Tetteh drew my attention to news making rounds or is it statements by you to the effect that the sponsorship package of the black stars would be rechanelled to the local league as GNPC’s CSR. I don’t think this is wrong in entirety but then i beg to differ. If priorities matter, then we need to see that some things are important but not urgent. Urgencies demand emergent actions and today I want to draw your attention to one, prolly two of such. Most oil and gas institutes in our nation and petroleum faculties lack laboratories and the right staffing.
Can we channel the funds into building well resourced laboratories for the petroleum engineering faculties in the various universities, where engineers graduate and have never seen a Core drilled section before or ever seen any part of a production platform. We spend thousands of pounds in sponsoring petroleum graduate studies each year.
What about directing that to the various petroleum/oil and gas institutes to revamp their faculties so there can be petroleum graduate studies here instead of the thousands of pounds we give to Aberdeen and Dundee or even Stavanger every year.
I know that as a former football administrator of my darling club Asante Kotoko, you know firsthand the challenges of the local league which I also am concerned about but I believe club administrators can be taught how best to do this without necessarily Investing oil revenue. I have heard remarks of football being the passion of the nation which is arguably so but lately I believe the trend has changed. The real passions of the youth are directed to brilliant science & maths quiz than even black star matches, I can get empirical data about this if you can give me time; I wont delay. I am a beneficiary of this prestigious science quiz in 2007 together with Amarkie Ayittah Jeffrey Sakyi Offeh Maame Sika Mawuena Hafeh Enoch Dompreh and several others who represented their schools for this flagship programme of Primetime Ghana Limited.
How about building a science village for them instead of using Legon campus for the quiz. Unlike football matches where gate proceeds from spectators fund operations, participants and old students who troop in to watch and learn pay nothing. Recently old students of my prestigious Yaa Asantewaa Girls were called upon by my diligent colleague Akua Agyekumwaa to support the school’s team. What about GNPC helping all participating schools with a substantive amount to motivate their trainers and students alike in books and tapes they use for the quiz.
Just last week when YAGHS won our contest we were given a meagre 1000 cedis whether for transport or item 13 I cant tell but that for a whole school is obviously scanty. Sir, I know your goodwill and kind heart because I have met you and can tell of your passions to raise an educated generation, please can GNPC fund science education instead, if the graduate petroleum courses is too much to expend oil revenue on? *A nation that loves to sponsor legs more than heads, only end up using their heads to carry loads and their sun to dry kako, koobi and konkonte only. -Achiaa Kusi Dapaah, 2017 at Kpando*
This and many others I wish, please thoughtfully consider my plea and humble request. I end here by saying that if you can honour this request, I want to be like you when I grow up; All the pain Alex Mould and his ilk caused us, we will easily forgive.
So help brilla Doc!
Signed…. A.A A. Kusi Dapaah
