The Minister of Education Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has called on the aggrieved students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) to desist from embarking on demonstration following police assault on Tuesday.
According to him, the ministry will liaise with the police to investigate the matter to unravel the truth about the brutalities.
Some students of KTI were reportedly assaulted by the police after they went on rampage vandalising police patrol cars, pelting of stones and blocking roads.
The police say the students engaged in confrontation with competing schools after they had won the Inter schools and colleges competition (Interco) at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Addressing the students at their campus, he pleaded with the students to exercise restraint as he seeks further clarification about the rampage that led to the firing of tear gas by the police.
The minister promised to ensure that offenders both the police on duty and the students who are found guilty face the full rigours of the law.
‘I will plead with the student body to exercise extreme patience, do not try to take the law into your hands, do not try and organize any demonstration, do not try to cause problems for the teachers and principal around. Be rest assured that we will get to the bottom of this problem and wherever punishment is due we will make sure punishment is meted out. If you try and engage the police they will turn round and use it as evidence against you, you are dealing with a group of people, a service with enormous powers, so we have to be smart to get our case across.
So I will plead with you that you exercise patience and let us pray for our brothers and our teachers who were shot, so from here we are going to the regional police headquarters to listen to their side. If it means that we have to go to Accra, to the IGP to make sure we get a panel to investigate this matter, we will do that,’ he assured.
Dr Opoku Prempeh admonished the students to go back to their classrooms hoping that the incident does not occur in any of the schools in the country.
He said he does not recall any incident of a sort where students were subjected to severe beatings by the police asking why the police fired life bullets.
‘Students have gone to stadia for games and there have been incidents but I don’t remember the last time life bullets were used on students, I don’t remember the last time. I could have said nothing if tear gas and things were used on the mob even if hot water were used but to get into KTI campus and fire life bullets is something else,’ he stated.
He expressed appreciation to God for protecting the students.
