Pregnancy is a weird, weird time. Thanks to 400 times (!) the normal amount of estrogen coursing through your body, things that would never have bothered you pre-pregnancy are now enough to send you into a full-blown meltdown.
On one level, you know it’s crazy to cry over those Johnson & Johnson baby bath commercials. But on the other hand… babies! In baths! Making baby noises! And smiling at mommies! And puppies! Pass the tissues! Hormones are the worst.
If you’ve ever found yourself in the midst of a pregnancy-induced irrational crying fit, know that you are so not alone. Grab a box of tissues and prepare to cry (with laughter) over what undid these soon-to-be moms.
“Watching the Olympics is always kind of emotional for me, but thanks to my pregnancy hormones this last summer’s games in Rio put me over the edge. I was in my last trimester and at my baby shower when a friend brought up someone — I don’t even remember who — winning a gold medal. Even though I was in the middle of opening my gifts, I burst out into heaving sobs, ‘It’s just so great…to see them…all their dreams are coming true! Their mothers must be so proud!’ My friends still tease me about that.” —Whitney Z., 29, Denver, CO
“My husband was traveling and I was so tired and so sick from the pregnancy. He’d been making all of our meals because smells made me nauseated, but I had to fend for myself while he was gone. The only thing I could stomach was mac ‘n’ cheese. I made a huge batch — homemade, exactly how I like it — and ate one serving for dinner. Then I was so tired I went straight to bed and forgot about it. The next morning I came downstairs to find the Pyrex dish still sitting out and I had to throw it all away. I cried so hard my eyes were swollen for two days.” —Katy W., 36, St. Petersburg, FL

“When my husband and I moved to Minnesota, my family had all stayed in Georgia. This was really tough on me, especially as I was 7 months pregnant. I hadn’t seen my dad in nearly a year and I missed him terribly. One day, I was at the grocery store and saw an adult daughter arguing with her dad about what kind of frozen rolls to buy. I lost it! I started bawling my eyes out because I didn’t have the luxury of arguing with my dad. I ran out and called my parents crying. I was so upset they thought something was wrong with the baby. We’ve since moved back!” —Amanda T., 35, Atlanta, GA
“I was soooo hungry and craving a particular salad from Panera. When I ordered I specially requested not to have the blue cheese included. We got it as take out and I didn’t realize until we were home that they’d put the blue cheese on top anyhow. I called them in hysterics. I was starving and that’s all I wanted to eat and now it was ruined! And, yes, we drove all the way back to get a new salad.” Cyndil G., 31, —Arvada, CO

“I had a major pregnancy craving for a chocolate shake so I went out and got one. When I got home, it slipped out of my hand and splattered all over the driveway. “My sister-in-law got her hair done at the salon for my baby shower and when she told me I went in the bathroom and sobbed because I didn’t know that it was one of ‘those’ occasions that required a professional. “At 8 months pregnant, I was checking out at Walmart. I had all my groceries on the belt, but when it comes to my turn the checker looks at me and says, ‘I’m going on my break, get in a different line.’ I responded that her light was on when I got in line. She said, ‘I don’t care!’ I told her I wanted to talk to a manager, and she said, ‘I don’t care!’ I put all my stuff back in my cart and went into the next line. The other checker apologized profusely and called the manager. When he came, I was sobbing so much I couldn’t even tell him what happened. I had to write it down on a piece of paper! It was so embarrassing! The manager assured me that the clerk was getting fired because it wasn’t the first time she had done it.” —Diana W., 34, Bountiful, UT
“When I was preggo, I’d burst out crying at totally bizarre songs on the radio. One was Kid Rock’s version of ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ I remember crying and telling my husband how much that song reminded me of my youth and he was, like, ‘You grew up in the suburbs! You never went to the lake. You never sipped whiskey out the bottle!’ And it was true” —Leslie A., 39, Chicago, IL

“I had a dream my husband gave me a fake pregnancy test after being paid $6,000 by my doctor to see if they could trick me into having pregnancy symptoms. “Because I was pregnant during one of the hottest summers ever, I was reliant on milkshakes from a favourite fast food place. One day, my husband texted that he was thinking of grabbing our family dinner from this place and asked what I wanted. I knew I had to have my milkshake and then added a couple sides and an entree so as to not look so desperate. He came home with everything but the milkshake because he didn’t have enough hands to carry in the order and the milkshake. He didn’t think it’d be a big deal until I had a full-blown temper tantrum. I threw down what I was holding, stomped my feet, and called him a butthead before running/waddling off to hide in my closet. My then 2-year old son came and said ‘Mommy, you have to get up now and stop crying. You’re a big girl and you need to eat your dinner.'” —Alex, 30, Denver, CO

But I ate it anyways because it was a burrito, sobbing the entire time because I missed the burritos I grew up with.” —Amanda S., 34, Denver, CO
