The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa P.C Appiah- Ofori is calling on Parliament to institute an independent committee to investigate the bribery allegations levelled against Energy Minister-designate Boakye Agyarko.
Mr Appiah-Ofori who doubted if money exchanged hands to approve the nomination of the Minister-designate whose approval was in the balance suggested that both the receiver and the collector of the bribe should be made to face the laws if proven to be true.
‘I agree that an investigative committee should be established to prove otherwise of the allegations. I will be willing to sit on that committee if appointed,’ he suggested.
The former legislator raised doubts about the quantum of the money purported to have been given out asking how the accuser would be able to settle the house with such a huge money.
A member of the committee Mahama Ayariga insists members of the minority caucus on the committee were given monies from Mr Agyarko through the Chairman of the committee Joe Osei-Owusu.
Speaking on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkra, he said he never heard any rumour or witnessed appointments committee members of Parliament receive bribes during vetting.
‘I don’t believe Mahama Ayariga’s allegation, if there are any allowance, it goes through the leadership of the committee from both sides, if Ayariga is a leader, then the money he received could be sitting allowances for his colleagues on the minority side, I don’t think the money was given to him alone, but his colleagues as well,’ he said.
He admitted that MPs sometimes receive gifts but not bribes to influence their judgment.
