It looks women get let picky when looking for love as they get older, but it might not be in the way you’d imagine…
According to a new study, it’s not looks we start to overlook – it’s brains.
As the Daily Mail reports, researchers at Queensland’s University of Technology analysed the behaviour of over 40,000 Australians on the online dating site RSVP, aged between 18 and 80.
They spotted a difference in the way that men and women considered education levels when selecting a potential date, nothing that this changed with age, too.
As study co-author Stephen Whyte says: ‘Education…is commonly used in human mating behaviour as a proxy for resources and future provision as it can represent economic advantages.’
However, while educated people tend to look for a mate with the same level of intelligence in general, it seems that women become even less bothered than men by this as they get older.
‘The more educated cohort tends to care less about matching the same level of education as they get older,’ Whyte added.
‘Older women, in particular, have a greater likelihood of contacting potential partners who are less educated than themselves but conversely, younger males fall into this category as well.’
Further study is now needed to determine why this might be the case. ‘More research is needed though so that we can have a better understanding of the impacts of cyber-dating on individuals and relationships as well as the psychology employed by people when using the internet to maximise their educational preference in a mate,’ adds Whyte.
Anyone else find this surprising revelation ever so slightly amusing?
