The Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has accused the former Communications Minister Omane Boamah of not being abreast with the law regarding the retirement packages and other emoluments for former Presidents.
According to him, Mr Boamah got it wrong with the allocation of a house for the former President hence his media rant.
Speaking on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkrah, he explained that the former Communications Minister should have known that the law regarding the entitlement package was not in existence at the time they wrote the letter on December 19, 2016.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame Constituency explained that the transitional team does not determine if a former President should be given a house or not.
He questioned why former President Mahama has kept mute on this issue questioning why members of the outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) are making a fuss about the house for President Mahama when they are ignorant of the law.
‘Omane Boamah said on December 19, 2016 they wrote the letter through the former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah to government’s transition team requesting the approval for the continuous stay of former President Mahama in his house, he claims the new government transition team approved that request. Omane Boamah is wrong because transitional team does not give house to former Presidents. A committee based on Article 71 will determine whether former Presidents should be given a house or not and other entitlements. He should have known better.
Omane Boamah does not know the law because on December 19, 2016 that they wrote the letter, there was no such law for the transitional team to even think of approving. There was no law,’ he said.
The Majority Leader indicated that the new law was reviewed on January 5, 2017.
He said the Chinery Hesse Committee recommended that Presidents be given retirement entitlements but former President Mahama refused to give what was due former President J.A Kufour.
The lawmaker complained that the Chinerry Hessey Committee recommended that Presidents be given retirement entitlements but former President refused to give what was due former President J.A Kufour.
