As expected, a great euphoria greeted the announcement that President Mahama, had made the concession call to Nana Akufo-Addo congratulating him as President-elect.
The hitherto quiet calm that had engulfed the city the past 48 hours since the polls closed was punctured with sounds of bleating car horns and blasts from fireworks.
I was, on doctors orders, lying on my back with my legs raised on my yoga ball at an angle to take pressure off my aching lower spine where my trapped nerve is pinched hardest!
I was delighted. Most of all, at the maturity in the whole process. In the days afterwards, both President Mahama and President- elect Akufo-Addo impressed me when they met last Sunday to co-chair the inauguration of the transition committee.
Two statesmen
I haven’t felt more proud to be Ghanaian: seeing the photos of those two statesmen on opposing political ideologies in our country, after months of acrimonious finger- pointing and taunts at each other, embrace and shake hands in such a manner as to endear themselves so!
Those images, I hope, will be shown a lot of times for every Ghanaian to see and know that political opposition need not be so acrimonious as to lead to fisticuffs. And remind us that at the end of the day, we are the people bound by agbadza and adowa and azonto!
Believe what you will but that our country survives threats that test our democracy is a result of our dance! That is to say our cultural bond! There’s something that binds us as a people. Something that keeps us at bay and holds us from going over the abyss and it is that thread in our way of life that helps to make us understand each other better.
Inherently, we know the right thing to do even if a few elements try to derail us. Anyway, here’s to the incoming administration. Hopefully, they will continue to light the torch on our culture and creative arts sectors so we can further develop what is indigenous to us. Our azonto!
Gold Coast restaurant
So, l’m making a right turn onto the Labone road from the AU Village road when at the junction, obeying traffic rules, I look this way and that before moving and I see, in the direction of Bistro 22, smoke. I make a double take and notice that it’s coming from a grill hoods at this new joint which I later discover to be the fast food arm of the famous Gold Coast restaurant!
Serving jerk pork and chicken with fried yam and kenkey, I couldn’t help but applaud the founders for their foresight.
Francesca, the co-owner is here supervising and I tell her how impressed I am with her hard work. I buy a pack of the pork, and I am not disappointed. The jerk spices are infused in the bones and I have a rollicking time sucking the juices! My, you wanna try it.
Meanwhile, weekends at their restaurant on the Nyaho Medical Centre road in Airport Residential is such a happening joint. The festive season here, I will be bringing you, as usual, listings of everything happening in the capital and beyond.
VIM Concert
This weekend, however, the record label Vision Inspired Music (VIM) in collaboration with Alliance Française Accra, presents the VIM Concert. A fun-filled and fantastic event full of great performances by the label’s artistes as well as artistes they collaborated with during the year. This is on tonight at the Amphitheatre of Alliance Francaise Accra at 7.00pm.
Apparently the last for this year, the night will feature performances from artistes such as Adomaa, Pappy Kojo, Sena Dagadu, Joey B , Akotowaa, among others. Bring your azonto tonight!
Jamestown Cafe
Continuing with the rich tradition of Open House at Jamestown Cafe, tomorrow ArchiAfrika will present local award-winning and emerging architect, Kobina Benning to give a lecture centred on two of his urban design projects. It will explore themes on how the design of architectural space can reflect a culture, a community and an identity.
So, let’s meet up there and get some insightful info over some drinks.
