The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has complained about the low turnout of voters in December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections describing it as ‘quite disappointing’.
Addressing journalists in Accra, the Chairperson of the Commission Madam Charlotte Osei wondered why majority of eligible Ghanaians refused to turn up to vote.
‘We are pretty disappointed at the turn out so far based on collated results from the 210 constituencies, the provisional turnout for the elections is about 49%, this is way below our history in election so far, and its quite disappointing,’ she bemoaned.
She assured that they are working assiduously to ensure that they complete the collation process very quickly saying they are certain they will be within their 72-hour time limit given yesterday.
‘Its important that we ensure that every vote counts, that is why we need to take our time, satisfy all due process and do all diligence and work with all the candidates agents so that when we tell you who your next president is, we are certain that the person has properly being elected and represent the choice of the majority of Ghanaians,’ she said.
She added that they are still waiting for more results from the collation centers saying its impossible to tamper with results.
The EC chair indicated that they will declare the results tomorrow.
