When Johnny Depp settled his domestic violence case with Amber Heard in August, she vowed to give every penny of her $7 million (£5m) settlement to ACLU’s domestic violence unit and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
It’s been more than three months since the vow and she’s not paid a penny to either organization, TMZ is reporting.
At the time, Johnny said he was sending the money directly to the organizations for his ex-wife, and he initially sent $200,000 to both in equal shares. Amber was reportedly furious that he did this, not wanting him to get a tax deduction for the payments.
Still, the question remains, why hasn’t Amber sent any money as promised? Sources told TMZ that Johnny and Amber have not signed the final settlement documents, therefore everything has stalled.
The main issue, the website claims, is that Johnny wants to pay the $7 million directly to the charities (each was to get $3.5 million.) She wants the money to go to her so that she can apparently send it off. Again, she doesn’t want him to get a tax break.
After the deal was initially struck, Johnny made the first payment for her. His rep said in a statement, “Following Amber Heard’s announcement that her divorce settlement was to be divided equally and gifted to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union, two exceptionally deserving and important charities, Johnny Depp has sent the first of multiple installments of those monies to each charity in the name of Amber Heard, which when completed will honor the full amount of Ms. Heard’s pledge.”
The rep added, “Ms. Heard’s generosity in giving to these wonderful causes is deeply respected.”
The final documents are expected to be signed next week. But, there could still be a huge hangup. Under the settlement, Amber is prohibited from mentioning the domestic violence accusations. Still, she recently recorded a PSA about her alleged experience. While she didn’t directly mention Johnny by name, she implied that it was him, saying it happened in her home and “behind closed doors with someone you love.”
She also makes a direct reference to the “public arena” that her domestic violence case played out in.
Whether Johnny will now honor the settlement isn’t clear.
