Contrary to the erroneous impression that Ghana is a poor economy which has accounted for its current woes, an economist and a publisher thinks otherwise.
Dr. A. O. Abudu believes the country is blessed with resources more than some of the developed countries but blamed its challenges to leadership spanning from successive governments.
He argues that if things are properly done, the country is capable of financing education of every child from pre-school to university before the student can wean himself/herself from government support.
The renowned Economist and Publisher however blames the situation to an upsurge of corrupt practices involving both public officials as well as politicians which has resulted in the perforation of holes in the national purse making it impossible for its resources generated through taxes to be retained.
“Ghana is a very rich country and can sponsor all students from nursery to university without them paying school fees. We are capable of doing that but our resources are rum like a basket; when something drops in it leaks out”, he observed.
Taking his turn at a Public Forum organized by EIB’s Ultimate Fm under the theme ‘the Leader Ghana Deserves’, he bemoaned the increasing corrupt practices in the country, stating that it has drawn the development fortunes of the country on a reverse gear.
He observed that a lot of money can be raised in the country for developmental purposes to inure to the benefits of the citizenry but said this can only be done if there are pragmatic measures in curbing the increasing corruption in all sectors.
“We can raise enough money in this country provided we can prevent theft and misappropriation of funds. We are poor people in a wealthy country; Wealthy enough to give quality education to each child up to the university level but bad leadership is impoverishing Ghana with corrupt practices”, he emphasized.
