The Volta regional vice chairman the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Archibald Letsa has stated that members of the party in the region will prevent Togolese and Beninois from voting during December polls.
He said though the party does not have issues with Ghanaians returning to Ghana to exercise their franchise, they will not allow foreigners to choose leaders for the country.
The party launched its ‘operation eagle eye’ on Tuesday aimed at encouraging their members, polling agents and party activists to be vigilant on the Election Day, so that they will not be short changed.
The executives also reviewed their target of 30% votes upwards to 50% and 3% to 5% parliamentary seats.
Speaking with host of Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo Kwame Adinkrah, he accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) gaining notoriety in mobilising foreigners to Ghana during elections to vote revealing that they are working assiduously to put the NDC to check.
He warned that they are not leaving any stone unturned to allow foreigners undermine the democracy enjoyed by Ghanaians.
‘We are opening our eyes wide, we are not going to sleep, we are telling our people to keep eye on the electoral officers so that we will not be short changed. We don’t have any problem with Ghanaians living in Togo returning to Ghana to vote. We know that there are Ghanaians in Togo, and other side of the border where one side is, so we are not bothered Ghanaians in Ghana coming to vote.
We are against Togolese nationals choosing our President for us. We are in this harsh economic situation and we want to choose our leaders. So we don’t want foreigners to come and elect leaders for us. So if a party is defending foreigners to come and choose our leaders for us, then that party is being untruthful and breeding illegality, no party should be allowed to encourage foreigners to vote in another country. I don’t think that is lawful. It’s a known fact they have been mobilising foreigners, that is what they have been doing over the years, that is why we have ‘operation eagle eye’ to be able to identify those people. We will not close our eyes for any party to do anything to undermine the democracy of the nation,’ he explained.
He said people are yearning for change of government, expressing hope that the crowd witnessed when the party’s flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa- Akufo visited the region will translate into votes.
