The Kumasi chapter of the Rotary club has launched a three-day health outreach project in two areas in the Ashanti Region to offer free health care to underprivileged residents in peri-urban communities.
The outreach dubbed the “Rotary family health days” programme which begun on Thursday October 20, is stationed in Sokoban Timpoom and Kronom Abuohea.
Ultimate News’ visit to the centers saw hundreds of residents being taken through free Hepatitis B, HIV, Diabetes and blood pressure tests and eye examinations.
The club is also fully financing a free deworming and immunization for children under five as well as the distribution of free bed nets to pregnant women within these three days.
Rotarian Prince Prempeh Gyamfi told Ultimate News, the move forms part of the contribution of the Rotary club to making the society a better place.
“Every year rotary has three days that we call the rotary family health days and we have designated these three days to actually help the people in our communities. It is not only the rotary club of Kumasi, all the clubs in Ghana has its own points and we are reaching people in deprived areas,” he explained.
He also noted that some patients had been referred to some health facilities including the Suntreso Hospital to have their conditions better managed.
A Public health nurse with the Suntreso government hospital Rachael Nyama Auben underscored the impact of the free health screening on the beneficiary societies.
A very elated Rachel indicated, “It’s been very helpful because we have seen many people with health conditions including eye problems who never knew they had eye problems.”
“What makes it unique is that it is free. Sometimes people will be cash trapped and even when they need these services, they cannot access the services because they don’t have the money. They have come in their numbers and this shows how they needed this intervention,’ she added.
The Kumasi Rotary Club has a huge membership of business executives, professionals and entrepreneurs who meet regularly at the Golden Tulip Kumasi City to deliberate and contribute both their expertise and funds to address numerous humanitarian projects.
