In its quest to educate women on the consequences of unplanned pregnancies, a sexual and reproductive health–focused organisation DKT international during its one-week road show in the Ashanti region sensitised women on proper family planning methods.
Dubbed ‘Lydia iPlan Community Tour’, started at Akropong, a suburb of Kumasi with over four hundred women and young girls taken through various family planning methods by Madam Salormey Siaka, who had been trained by DKT.
Over 1,000 women mostly market women in Bohyen, Anloga and Sepaase also benefited from the education programme which was mostly focused on Long–Acting Reversible Contraception such as the Lydia IUD.
There were also opportunities for spontaneous one-on-one counselling sessions during the programme.
The programme was aimed at disabusing the minds of local folks about the myths and misconceptions surrounding family planning and providing comprehensive information about the various methods of Family Planning.
There were series of drama by Kumawood Stars which portrayed the suffering of less privileged parents with unplanned children go through as well as the benefits associated with family planning.
The play which was replicated in the various market centres was acted by Kumawood stars such as Yaw Dabo, Big Akwes, Kojo Poku, P4, Patricia Bentum among others.
Speaking during the sensitization programme at Akropong, Senior Midwifery Officer at the Healthy Care Hospital, Madam Salomey Siaka debunked the assertion that family planning contraceptives cause fibroids and infertility.
‘It is not true that women who take contraceptives develop potbellies or fibroids,’ she said.
Kumawood Actress Mercy Asiedu who played the ambassadorial role entreated women and the youth present to concentrate on their work and education than just giving unplanned births which will intend to burden society.
She observed that most of the young girls who engage in unprotected sex die in the process in their quest to abort unplanned babies.
According to her, most of the youth who engage in nefarious social vices such as prostitution and armed robbery are mostly from poor homes, saying they are in this act because their parents are unable to fend for them.
‘The economy is not really in good shape, so you need to plan on the number of children you can cater for, the days of giving birth to many children is now a thing of the past. It’s pointless to give birth to lots of children without taking proper care of their needs,’ she urged.
Programmes Manager for DKT international, Isaac Opoku Lamptey told Ultimate News, the programme would be replicated in other parts of the Region to ensure that as many women as possible are sensitized to adopt proper family planning methods.
‘What we are hoping to achieve generally is that many women receive the right information on family planning and ensure we provide the right support to service providers to assist the women in making the right choices such as the Lydia range of Contraceptives,’’ he said.
Some market women who spoke to Ultimate news from various communities expressed appreciations to DKT for enlightening them on proper family planning.
