President John Dramani Mahama is set to appoint Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a seasoned sports administrator and politician, as the Minister of Youth and Sports.
Reports indicate that Vanderpuye, a former Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, has been identified as the ideal candidate for the position, with President Mahama convinced of his capability to lead the sector effectively.
Mahama has already submitted his initial set of ministerial nominations to Parliament, fulfilling a key constitutional requirement following his inauguration as President on January 7, 2025.
Vanderpuye previously held the same position in 2015 after a ministerial reshuffle by then-President Mahama, replacing Dr. Mustapha Ahmed. Should he return to the role, expectations are high for him to implement impactful changes once again.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye vows to sanitise Ghana football
Speaking to Joy Sports, Vanderpuye, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, has pledged to reform Ghanaian football if given the opportunity to serve again.
If I become the Minister of Sports in 2025, I will sanitise the system. I am not happy with the current state of things in our football. A lot is going wrong, and unless we take bold steps to clean up the system and make decisions that benefit players and genuine football stakeholders, the sport will not grow
He emphasised the need to ensure that those who invest in football—both financially and emotionally—reap the rewards of their efforts, rather than exploitative individuals.
The people who play the game, invest their money, and dedicate their time deserve to benefit from it, not those who treat footballers and stakeholders like poultry chickens, ready to be picked for stew and soup whenever they please. That will not happen under my watch.
As a former footballer and sportsman, Vanderpuye vowed to fight against exploitation and create an environment where athletes and stakeholders can thrive.
