Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has opened up about his relationship with Andre Ayew during a live session with fans on his Instagram page.
According to Gyan, the 2010 BBC African Player of the Year, Andre has been influenced by propaganda because it benefitted those around him.
Although it is unclear what triggered the emotional outburst, the former Sunderland striker reflected on his past experiences with the Black Stars while interacting with his followers.
Describing his relationship with Ayew, Gyan acknowledged that Ayew is a good person but hinted that he was influenced to serve the interests of certain individuals rather than the collective good.
Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me, but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people. That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.
The reasons behind Gyan's comments remain unclear, but many believe he was expressing feelings he had kept to himself for years.
Asamoah Gyan, who enjoyed strong relationships with teammates during his time with the Black Stars, officially retired in June 2023 after 18 years of professional football.
Gyan's Black Stars achievements
The retired striker is Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.
Gyan played above his strength to score six goals at the FIFA World Cup, making him the top-scoring African player in the tournament's history.
Despite his striking abilities, he has always shown dedication, and lots of Ghanaians hope that he returns to the field not as a player but as a coach to lead the Black Stars.
