A major fire has broken out at the Kantamanto market in central Accra, with 13 fire tenders from various parts of Greater Accra deployed to the scene to fight the flames.
The fire began around 1:00 am and has caused significant damage to several shops in the Kantamanto Railways area. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded quickly to the emergency, initially sending five fire appliances from Makola, the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, the National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Parliament House.
To assist with firefighting, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was called in to cut the power supply to the area. Within an hour, three more fire tenders from Circle, Trade Fair, and Dansoman were sent to the scene, bringing the total number of appliances to eight.
As the operation continued, two additional fire tenders from Abelenkpe and Kasapreko joined the effort, raising the number to 10. More fire tenders from Tema Regional Headquarters and Madina arrived shortly after, followed by one from the Legon Fire Station, bringing the total to 13 fire appliances.
As of 6:00 am, the fire is still burning, and the GNFS personnel are working hard to control the blaze after five hours of firefighting.
The GNFS provided updates on the situation and streamed live the attempt by brave firefighters to quench the fire. However, there has been no update on the situation for the past two hours.
The general public, especially residents and market women who ply their trade in and around Accra Central, are advised to be cautious.
Meanwhile, the cause of the fire has not been established yet.
