Power Outages: GRIDCo explains cause of Monday’s ‘dumsor’

Most areas in Accra saw their lights go off in the early hours on Monday, without any prior notice.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has explained what accounted for early Monday’s power outages in major parts of the country.

A statement from the independent utility body said the power outages were caused by “a disturbance on its transmission network”.

Most areas in Accra saw their lights go off in the early hours on Monday, January 29, 2018, without any prior notice.

Residents who were affected could not hide their frustration, with some blaming the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the power outage.

However, ECG denied responsibility with Public Relations Officer, William Boateng insisting “the problem is not from ECG, it’s from our transmission company in Ghana here, GRIDCo. GRIDCo is having some challenges”.

GRIDCo later clarified, explaining that the blackout was caused by an interference in their transmission network.

“Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the general public of a disturbance on its transmission network resulting in the loss of electricity supply to consumers in some parts of the country,” a statement from GRIDCo said.

The statement added: “GRIDCo is working to restore supply to consumers.”
