Police are warning residents to avoid the area around the hospital.
A gunman fatally shot one person and wounded several others before apparently killing himself at a New York City hospital Friday afternoon, the Associated Press reported.
At least three doctors were among those shot at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, the New York Times reported. Their condition is unknown.
An NYPD spokesman confirmed that the shooter is dead.
Police described the shooter as wearing a blue shirt and white lab coat that concealed a long gun, and one law-enforcement official said he may have been an employee of the hospital, according to the Times.
According to the New York Daily News, the shooter may have been barricaded on the hospital's 16th floor. Police had responded to the incident after receiving reports of an "active shooter" situation.
Several reports said the shooting took place around 3 p.m.
Police are warning residents to avoid the area around the hospital.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the situation and is en route to the hospital, his office said.
