Retail sales slipped.
Sales fell 0.3% month-over-month in May, according to the Commerce Department.
Economists were expecting sales to hold flat in May, according to Bloomberg data.
Excluding gas and auto sales, retail sales were unchanged in May. This, too, was below expectations: economists forecast sales ex-auto and gas would rise 0.3%.
Nonstore retails were up 10.2% year-over-year in May, after climbing 11.9% in year-over-year in April.
April's retail sales were revised to 0.4%.
