While there is no secret that lottery is pretty popular and well-established in Ghana, there’s a new gaming thing trending rapidly: sports betting. How did this happen and why?
Being one of the fastest-growing economies for the year 2017, Ghana is starting to develop in many other aspects, not only the financial.
Who started it?
For starters, 5 betting companies started their legal operations throughout the country and seem to be pretty successful.
They claim that people love betting on European baseball and football, as well as tennis and boxing, and the American NBA basketball.
These companies have managed to grow thanks to the population’s interest. They currently own more than 20 betting shops.
Naturally, they say that young men are the ones who are betting the most, usually on weekends. This is when the betting shops are pretty crowded, having people stare in the huge flat screens.
Why did they open the betting shops?
And, instead of as a shortcoming, the operators think of the betting as an advantage for the jobless young men who seem to be amazed by the betting shops.
They have currently given jobs to approximately 150 people, but are planning to increase that number up to approximately 5,000 people.
In addition, the CEOs of the companies in question agree that the growth of betting can also raise the domestic football profile, and maybe the football teams could soon enter in the sporting events that you can bet on.
They say that people in Africa are more interested in watching European sports events now, instead of watching their own domestic teams as they used to in the past when African football was popular.
They say that they have already put the Ghanaian Leagues in the market and bookmakers all around the world are making inquiries about them. They believe that soon they'll manage to motivate the players, as well as the audience and the bettors to start respecting and protecting the domestic sport more.
How do Ghanaians react to it?
And, lastly, the sport betting operators, of course, believe that these betting shops will contribute to the economic growth of the country. That's why their prime aim is to expand even more the betting establishments and to help the country develop even more.
The best part of all of this is that people are satisfied and look positively at the betting process, unlike many other countries who want or have already banned betting. People in Ghana truly believe in betting shops as investments that will put Africa to a whole new level. The benefits, they claim, that the betting industry will bring outweigh any negative comments about it.
So, if the people are happy, the government allows it, the betting companies make a profit of it and offer employments, then, who are we to judge? Let the people have fun!
