Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday said his government will find a way of subsidizing electricity on production but not on consumption.
The Zambia leader said that this will be done in order to increase productivity in various sectors of the economy.
The Zambian leader was speaking when he toured some farming blocs in Mkushi district in Central province, according to state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.
Last month, the country’s energy regulator, the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), approved a 75 percent increase in the price of electricity for retail customers to be implemented in two installments.
The first 50 percent installment became effective on May 15 while the second one will be implemented on Sept. 1.
The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has already asked the government for special electricity tariffs for the farmers while mining firms are currently in dialogue with the government on tariffs for the sector. Enditem
