Court fines two car thieves for stealing a GHC 35,000 car

A Tarkwa circuit court has fined two men 2,400 Ghana cedis each, for stealing a Hyundai Sonata saloon car worth 35,000 Ghana cedis.

The convicts, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and stealing in default would serve 36 months imprisonment each.

They are Ebenezer Fosu, a 28 year-old vulcanizer and Abdul Raham Abdul Salam, a welder, 30.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, told the court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, that the complainant, Eric Fosu, is a businessman at Jerusalem, a suburb of Tarkwa, whilst the convicts and one Nana who is on the run are friends.

She said in September, last year, Nana was arrested for fraud and Ebenezer Fosu, who is the younger brother of the complainant pleaded so that his friend could be released from police cells so the complainant intervened.

Chief Inspector Anaman said Ebenezer later informed Eric that Nana was offering a Hyundai Sonata saloon car with registration number GT 5619-16 for sale.

According to the Prosecutor, Eric showed interest and purchased the car for 35,000 Ghana cedis after which he handed it over to Ebenezer to do some maintenance in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

The Prosecutor said Ebenezer spend two weeks to complete the necessary works and after which he returned the car to Eric in Tarkwa.

Chief Inspector Anaman further told the court that after Eric had used the car for a while, he gave the documents covering the car, his passport picture and drivers’ license to the convicts and asked them to effect the change of ownership for him.

The Prosecution said Nana declined and Ebenezer informed Abdul and he advised him to send the car to Kumasi to sell it.

The convicts and their accomplice took the car to Kumasi and swap the Hyundai Sonata saloon car with Toyota camry belonging to one Akoto and then sold the camry to a car dealer for 25,000.

She said the car dealer made part payment of 15,000 Ghana cedis and Abdul vanished with that amount and Ebenezer also later went for the balance of 10,000 Ghana cedis.

Chief Inspector Anaman said when Akoto attempted to sell the car, he had information that it had been stolen.

He, therefore, lodged a complaint with the Kumasi police and Ebenezer was arrested and transferred to the Nsuta police in Tarkwa to assist investigation.

She said Abdul was later apprehended from his hideout at Bankyim, a suburb of Tarkwa.
