MOFA provides Bongo farmers with 6,040 bags of fertilizers

The Bongo District Directorate of Agriculture has taken delivery of 6,040 bags of NPK fertilizer from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) as part of government’s “Planting for Food and Jobs” programme.

Mr Edgar Dra, the Bongo District Director of the Agriculture, said his outfit is also expecting an additional consignment of maize, rice, sorghum and soya bean seeds before it will commence distribution to farmers.

He said 2,443 potential beneficiary farmers have been registered while a two-week window remains opened for registration of more farmers onto the programme.

Mr Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, the Bongo District Chief Executive, in an interview with the GNA, said the arrival of the goods would boost production and many farmers would start the farming season with hope.

He commended the President for initiating the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme and making farming a very attractive option.

Mr Ayinbisa said with the distribution of the subsidized fertilizer which will cost only GHC 27.00 per bag, coupled with the supply of improved seeds, he was optimistic the programme would produce the intended results.

He, however, warned against the smuggling of the highly subsidized fertilizer and other farm inputs to neighbouring countries adding that he has held a meeting with the district’s security chiefs and instructed them to intensify surveillance at border crossing points.

Mr Ayinbisa urged beneficiary farmers to pay back the cost of inputs for others to benefit from the programme as well.
