Rwanda will host for the first time Africa Movie Awards Nominees 2017, said a statement released Friday by organizers.
The Africa Movie Awards gala night due on June 24 at Kigali Exhibition Center, formally called Camp Kigali, will bring together Africa’s outstanding film makers, actors and actresses in 28 categories.
The event is considered as the most prestigious entertainment industry event of its kind in Africa as well as the biggest gathering of movie makers across the African continent.
The event is being organized by Africa Movie Awards Academy (AMAA), an organization that was established in 2005 with an aim to facilitate the development and relevance of film and cinema profession on the African continent. Up to 155 nominees from recent announcements for 13th Africa Movie Awards 2017 are expected in Kigali.
Clementine Dusabejambo’s film A Place for Myself is the only Rwandan that was nominated for 2017. Dusabejambo’s film earned her a prize at last year’s Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), where she emerged overall winner.
The aim of the awards is to recognize excellence and professionalism in the African film industry, developing young filmmakers through creation of channels of distribution, establishing rural cinemas to promote African culture.
Other objectives are to encourage professionalism in the movie industry and offer professional development and networking opportunities.
Famous movie actors and actresses such as Nigeria’s Ramsey Nouah, film directors and producers such as Ghana’s Lydia Forson, Nigeria’s Emem Isongo, Nkem Owoh, Rita Dominic and Nigerian band Maestros will be performing in Kigali. Enditem
