Do you know that Madam Sun Baohong, the Chinese Ambassador, on Tuesday, donated items, including desktop computers, printers, UPS and a cheque for GHc10,000 to the office of the Attorney General.?
Ordinarily there is nothing with it since there has been long standing good relationship between Ghana and China. However, the current generosity by the Embassy of China in Ghana to the Attorney General’s Office and to the Ghana Police Service, raises suspicion over the true intention of the Chinese. Many Ghanaians do not know why the Chinese Embassy has targeted no government outfit other than the two mentioned above. The Ghana Integrity Initiative, the local representatives of Transparency International has also raised a query when the Chinese Embassy donated office equipment to the Ghana Police and went on to donate 10,000ghc and office equipment to the Attorney General’s Office. The donations have come at a time when China has been heavily criticized for giving ‘subtle backing’ for the involvement of its nationals in illegal mining activities in Ghana.
Currently, there are several Chinese nationals standing trial for their involvement in illegal mining activities following a clamp down by government on the menace which is destroying water bodies and farmlands. Ordinarily there is nothing wrong with the Chinese showing generosity to our institutions known to be under resourced. But, since many people are raising eyebrows over the issue, the two institutions, the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s office must do well to stay clear from compromising their integrity in the prosecution and trials of the suspects in the illegal gold mining that has led to the destruction of our farms and water bodies. Let the whole nation continue to have confidence in our law enforcement agents and justice system for any slip in the two institution would lead to us losing out in our fight against Galamsey and other illegal activities involving Chinese citizens and other foreigners.
