Policemen have shot a man at the Notre Dame Cathedral after he attacked French officers on duty with a hammer.
The suspect was shot in the chest and has since been rushed to the hospital.
Tourists fled for cover at the sound of the gunshots. Since the incident occurred, police cars marked the perimeter and are advising revelers and citizens to stay away from the areas surrounding the Notre Dame cathedral.
About 900 persons are inside the cathedral, with police sealing off the area till they are sure no further attacks are imminent.
French police say they are treating the incident as a terror attack.
France was a victim of terror attack only two years ago when 139 people were killed. The country has been in a state of emergency since then.
