West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) returned to the summit of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) table with an emphatic 5-0 demolition of Accra Hearts of Oak in their week 17 game played at Sogakope, yesterday.
The Academy boys lived up to the bill as pre-match favourites and did so in whirlwind fashion, teaching the Phobians some football lessons on the day the Phobians just failed to perform.
On Hearts’ previous visit to the same venue, they went down 3-0 by the 20th minute so when they crossed that mark, they only hoped an upset was on the way.
But the annihilation started on the 28 minute when mercurial midfielder, Majeed Ashimeru hit a powerful long range which zoomed straight into the net with Hearts goalkeeper, Samuel Akurugu left in wonderland.
This was after Patrick Razak had missed a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead.
Just when the Phobians tried to settle down, WAFA went close to doubling the lead two minutes later but Daniel Lomotey’s connection missed the target by inches.
But they made amends for that miss two minutes into time added on in the first half when left back Abdul Wahab Ibrahim poked home to put his side in a 2-0 comfortable lead into the break.
The vintage Academy boys resumed the second half in full force and dictated the pace to Hearts and took only five minutes in the half to register the third goal through Daniel Lomotey who rounded the Hearts defensemen before slotting past onrushing Akurugu.
On 57 minutes, the visitors nearly reduced the deficit, but after dribbling goalkeeper Razak Abalora, striker Kwame Kizito failed to connect home, allowing the WAFA defense to recover.
The home side took total control of the game as skipper Gideon Waja and Ashimeru led the football ‘orchestra’ in midfield which saw the Phobians chasing shadows.
Abukari Ibrahim headed home a corner in the 60th minute to make it 4-0 before Lomotey added the fifth goal a minute later when the Phobian defense was caught off guard by some swift movements from the home side to rip them apart.
