In a move to make ICT part of the universal services in the Namibia, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Stanley Simataa Namibia launched Telecom Namibia services in three constituencies of the Zambezi Region.
The Deputy Minister in a statement on Wednesday said, “We want to provide equal opportunities to all Namibians, whether in urban or rural areas of our country. This becomes even more important in rural Namibia.”
At the event, he praised Telecom Namibia for heeding to government call and expanding its network to the Sibbinda, Katima Rural and Kabbe constituencies in the Zambezi Region.
The new Telecom Namibia base station will provides much-needed basic voice and Internet services to government offices, schools, clinics, business establishments and residences in the area.
“Besides Chinchimane, the fixed wireless network also covers nearby villages like Masokotwani, Mazoba, Malundu, Kanono, Muketela, Linyanti and up to Kapani areas home to close to 3000 people in some 25 small villages,” he added.
Furthermore, Simataa said that the Ministry was busy finalizing what he termed, a “Universal Access to ICT Policy”. He said the policy would allow service providers in the ICT sector to contribute part of their profits to a fund so that both urban and rural areas are provided with ICT infrastructure.
According to him, there is a high number of people migrating from rural areas to towns because of lack of opportunities there, hence the need to address the drivers of development like ICT, water and energy to stem the tide. Enditem
