Ghana international footballers Muntari and Muniru ‘Sarki’ Sulley have lost their father Alhaji Sulley Muniru, GHANASoccernet.com can confirm.
The man known as Alhaji Muniru Muntari aka ‘Coach’ has been battling illness for some time now and a family friend confirmed the news.
He passed on at the 37 Military Hospital on Monday afternoon after he was rushed there on Sunday evening following excessive pain.
The devout Muslim will be buried according to Islamic tradition on Tuesday morning.
“Great DAD!! We know you already safe out there! REST IN PEACE?? Just keep praying for us like always.??????????Sound sleep MUNIRU,” Muntari’s younger brother Muniru who shares the same name with their dad tweeted.
Alhaji Muniru previously coached Nigerian side Kano Pillars in Northern Nigerian where Muntari was born.
He is also the former El-Kanemi Warriors coach.
Alhaji Sulley was the head of the Hausa community in Dofa.
The deceased was not a popular figure in the media, but will be most remembered for his intervention during a spat between his elder son [Sulley Muntari] and certain officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Alhaji Sulley famously revealed that he warned his son about being quick-tempered, and went ahead to apologise on Sulley Muntari’s behalf after the midfielder assaulted an Executive Committee member during the 2014 World Cup.
His first son Sulley Muntari is one of the most decorated Ghanaian footballers having won trophies with Inter Milan and AC Milan.
His youngest son Muniru junior is also with Romanian side Steau Bucuresti.
