Apaak questions 13000 government workers dismissal

Member of Parliament for Bulisa South in the Upper East region, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, is accusing Civil Society Organizations and supposed Neutrals in the country of turning a blind eye to the numerous human rights violations and inhuman dismissal of workers from the public service by President Akufo-Addo’s administration because they were allegedly employed under the Mahama government.

According to the legislator these same moral society who were strong advocates against “winner takes all” during the reign of Mahama government have suddenly lost their voices even when President Akufo-Addo has now introduced a worst concept he referred to as “Winner Sacks and Takes all”.

He said civil society organizations, academia, clergy and other neutrals in society who were loud in condemning “winner takes all” in the past now see nothing wrong with President Akufo-Addo sacking people from the public service and replacing them with NPP activists.

Reacting to news about series of dismissals from the public service, Dr Apaak wrote on his facebook wall “We have gone from “winner takes all” to ‘winner sacks and takes all… Yet those voices: think tanks, pro-democracy activists and institutions, leaders of moral society, trade union leaders; who saw everything wrong with what they called “winner takes all”, today seem to accept “winner sacks and takes all”.

He added “Indeed change has come. Back then “winner takes all” was dangerous for the future of our democracy. Today, “winner sacks and takes all” is NOT dangerous for the future of our democracy! I’m a citizen!”
President Akufo-Addo has since January 7 when he took office ordered the dismissal of several Ghanaians employed/worked under the National Democratic Congress government from the public and civil service.

The aL-hAJJ last week reported that a staggering 13000 public sector workers have been so far fired by the Akufo-Addo government as a response to calls by Member of Parliament for Assin Central , Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Energy Minister, Mr Boakye Agyarko and Chief of Staff, Mrs Akosua Frema Opare-Osei for public sectors to be replaced with NPP activists.

The dismissed public servants, most of who were hired during the eight year rule of the NDC administration, the paper reported, have been shown the exit in fulfillment of the NPP government’s policy to dispense with the services of government workers suspected of being sympathizers of the NDC.

The affected workers include 205 employees of National Service Secretariat, 110 middle level staff of COCOBOD, 265 Police recuits, 252 personnle of National Security, 200 staffs of NHIA, over 800 Beneficiary Monitoring Assistants of the Youth Enterprise Agency, 100 employees of DVLA and other employees of MASLOC, NADMO, YES, SSNIT, VRA, GRIDCO, GRA, GAPOHA, TOR, Ghana Gas Company, and Immigration Service among others.

Their places are being taken over by known activists of the governing party. This, Dr Apaak said must be condemned by everybody, especially the moralists who advocated from a move away from “winner takes all” when the NDC and President Mahama was in power.
