South African ruling party calls for inquiry into state capture by business

South Africa’s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), on Monday called for a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the influence of business to government.

While briefing the media in Johannesburg about the the National Executive Committee (NEC) resolutions, Gwede Mantashe, ANC general secretary said, “the NEC called for the establishment of the Judiciary Commission of Inquiry into the influence of business on the ANC. We want them to drill deeper to around 1994 and investigate the involvement of business in influencing government and state in making decisions broadly.”

This comes after the Public Protector’s report last year mentioned allegations by senior government who said they were offered government positions by the rich Indian Gupta family.

The Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, called for the establishment of the Judiciary Commission of Inquiry to determine the authenticity of the allegations.

Mantashe said the ANC NEC supports that move but have to go back to post independence and establish if the government have been captured by business.

The opposition have tabled the motion of no confidence on President Jacob Zuma in Parliament. Parliament is waiting for the Constitutional Court judgment whether voting should be on secret ballot or not.

The ANC NEC expressed confidence that even if the voting is done secretly or not, their Members of Parliament will not support it. Enditem
