Newmont Ahafo mine, in the Asutifi North District of Brong-Ahafo Region, has built a local bamboo bicycle factory at the cost of GHC826,028.72 at Gyedu, a mining community within its catchment area.
The factory constructed last September also has 12 rooms, offices and spacious compound.
Mr Amos Agyepong, the Manager of factory, said it has 24 apprentices including four females adding that since its establishment, 50 bicycles have been manufactured.
He said this during a tour of the facility led by officials of the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF).
Mr Agyepong said the factory has acquired more hectares of land and very soon it would go into bamboo production to feed the facility.
He said the factory could be expanded and benefit from government’s one district one factor project.
Madam Elizabeth Owusu Darko, the Executive Secretary of NADeF, the Newmont Ahafo mine’s flagship fund for social responsibility commitment, explained that the facility was established to provide employment for the youth in the area.
She urged the youth to take advantage of the facility and acquire some training to enhance their socio-economic wellbeing.
