Health providers receive training on respiratory therapy

Anaesthesia doctors and nurses at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have received intensive training in respiratory therapy for efficient management and treatment of respiratory and other pulmonary diseases.
They were exposed to professional skills they needed to properly manage respiratory problems at the intensive care unit of the referral facility to reduce deaths.
The training was organized by a team of respiratory therapy professionals from the Weber State University in the United States (US).
The team, led by Dr. Lisa M. Trujillo, also presented large quantity of drugs and other medical consumables to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit.
Dr. Trujillo indicated that respiratory therapy was important in trauma management and treatment and emergency cases.
That was why the Weber State University, together with other partners, was spearheading the introduction of respiratory therapy course in selected universities and hospitals to promote the training of professional respiratory therapists in Ghana.
She said the University of Ghana Medical School, had already begun a Bachelor of Science course in this, and that the first batch of students would soon come out.
She said the training of respiratory therapists at the Bachelor’s level would help to efficiently deal with disorders to save lives.
Dr. Joseph Akpaloo, Chief Executive Officer of KATH, said the hospital had always been at the forefront of providing additional training for its staff to equip them with the vital skills and expertise for quality health care delivery.
He thanked members of the American team for the support and said the hospital would continue to strengthen the collaboration to promote respiratory therapy training in the country.
