The Volunteer against Entertainmental Degradation, an NGO interested in sustainable environmental practices, has presented a big white ram to Mr John Peter Amewu, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
The gift was in appreciation of the Minister’s good works, especially the fight against illegal mining, popularly called “galamsey”.
Mr Richard Addo, the Chief Executive Officer of the NGO, urged the Minister to continue the fight and not be perturbed by the call by some elements in the society to lift the ban on galamsey.
He asked the Sector Minister to constitute community volunteers in mining areas to complement government’s efforts.
Mr Addo said the volunteers to monitor mining sites and inform the Police or taskforce to cause the arrest of persons engaging in galamsey.
The Lands Minister expressed gratitude to the NGO for recognition of government efforts to stop galamsey.
He said government was not against mining but abhor the approach adopted by some miners that was destroying the environment and water bodies.
He called for all and sundry to join the “Stop galamsey” campaign to ensure sustainable environment.
The minister has since visited Eastern, Western and Ashanti regions with the campaign against galamsey.
