Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Samuel Annor, has revealed that the authority will roll out payment of some GHc1.2 billion covering a 12-month period of arrears they owe service providers beginning from today May 22, 2017.
He made this revelation on Accra-based radio station, Citi FM, describing it as the fourth payment to be made since the Nana Addo government took office. He also made know to the public the authority’s intended measures of paying service providers stating that instead of one month payment, they will be paid two months progressively.
“Since the current government assumed office, this payment which most subscribers will be receiving on Monday will be the fourth payment since we assumed office. The one going this week will probably be twice of what they received during the previous one.”
“Previously they were being paid maybe one month at a time, they might receive two months this time and probably by June or July there will be more payments. So we are working around the clock to reduce the debt stock,” he added.
It can be recalled that the Chief Executive, in the past, sent messages of the scheme being “almost bankrupt”, sending signals to insurance providers that more time may be needed to settle outstanding claims. He attributed increase in membership as a causative factor to the troubling finances of the NHIA, writing off the scheme as not being in stable condition.
“The NHIA is at a stage where one will say it almost bankrupt; in that, we have no reserves and we owe people so much. And this has come about because we have increased our membership so much but we have not increased the funding appropriately.”
However, he promised that the Authority will pay all arrears in due course.
