Namibia is in a consultative process to finalize the national migration policy aimed at addressing migration dynamics the country experiences.
Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Erkki Nghimtina, in a speech read on his behalf by Permanent Secretary Bro-Mathew Shinguandja, on Thursday said that the policy is aimed at developing a labor migration system to benefit from the developmental impacts of immigration in and out of Namibia.
“This migration policy is therefore a milestone for Namibia’s social and economic development agenda, as in line with the SADC (Southern African Development Community) protocol on the facilitation of movement of persons,” he said on Thursday at the consultative workshop to analyze the policy on migration in Windhoek.
According to United Nations Resident Representative Kiki Gbeho, Namibia becomes one of the first SADC countries to heed to the call to develop a national labour migration policy as recommended SADC Migration Action Plan.
“Many foreign workers render their services in Namibia to help fill critical skills gap in the labour market, and similarly a large number of Namibians are working overseas contribution migrant workers make towards development. This can only be fully explored once Namibia has a comprehensive national labour migration policy, hence the importance of the policy,” she said.
The migration policy was crafted in accordance with the provisions of Article 19 of the SADC Protocol on Employment and Labour of 2014, which among other put emphasis on improvement of migration and control.
The draft script policy was crafted by Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation in collaboration with United Nation’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other key stakeholders.
The policy, once finalized, will be submitted to Cabinet for endorsement. Enditem
