23 Ethiopians have been convicted of committing terror acts in alliance with Islamic militant groups Al-Shabab and Al-Qaeda.
According to a report on Wednesday by the Ethiopia state affiliated media outlet Radio Fana, the accused between 2010 and 2014 initiated movements to ban paying taxes and non-abidance of Ethiopian laws as well as conducted robberies of vehicles in areas bordering Southern and Oromia regional states.
They were also accused of forming armed gangs with the intention of eventually creating an Islamic state in Ethiopia, as well as recruiting members and training them in neighboring Somalia alongside Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda forces.
In one particular brutal incident the accused were convicted in the robbery and murder of a Chinese in November 2013, in Shebe woreda of Jimma zone, Oromia regional state.
The 23 individuals were given prison sentences ranging from four years to fifteen years behind bars. Enditem
