Sierra Leone commenced on Tuesday its first mass civil registration, covering all ages and foreigners residing in the country.
Enumerators employed and trained by National Civil Registration Authority (NRCA) are currently visiting schools across the country, registering pupils.
According to the Director General of NRCA, Foday Kamara, the process would last for over a month and would end on June 30,2017.
He said the goal of the civil registration is to capture data of all citizens and foreigners residing in Sierra Leone, so as to help government in development planning.
He said the process would help provide accurate data which government would use to better plan for the existing population in terms of providing basic healthcare services, among other developments.
Free birth certificate would be provided for children from age one to five, while biometric identity cards would be provided for all citizens who go through the process.
Meanwhile, President Ernest Bai Koroma has called on citizens to cooperate and be registered, emphasizing that the identity cards that would be provided would bear a social security number that would serve individuals for a lifetime. Enditem
